A Profound Lesson In Parenting

Today I received a profound lesson in parenting. Who would have thought a simple hello to a colleague would lead to such a profound moment?

This simple interaction reminded me of two things:

  1. The value of talking to my kids.

Wait, before you lament on the hazards of talking to your teens, I want you to know I understand. I’ve got two teens who more and more hideaway in their rooms or prefer their air pods to my words. That’s why this conversation was such a great reminder. Her words reminded me of just how important it is to talk to our kids. Not just talking at them either but giving them a voice and providing a space to talk without judgment or fear of response. To take time & honor their words and feelings with love and acceptance. When we give them this space (even when all we hear are crickets) eventually they’ll know it’s safe to come to us when they’re really struggling. Trust me, these are parent payday moments.

  2. The power of my smile.

It’s the first thing they look for when we pick them up from school, after a game or performance, or in the moments they feel down and need a lifesaver to pull them out of their sadness. Our smile has the power to let them know their safe. This simple thing communicates love and acceptance and lets them know it’s going to be alright.

The role of mom isn’t easy. The list of to-dos is long. We can get wrapped up in our own world. Speaking for myself these two simple reminders helped me refocus on what’s most important. Like you, I want my kids to feel love and acceptance. So next time you see your kids smile like a fool and be there to listen when they need you the most.
